Artist's Description

The horse is said to fly so lightly through the night sky that, when it accidentally steps on the back of a swallow in midflight, the undisturbed bird looks over her shoulder to see what has touched her.

This is my pastel interpretation of the famous figurine of the Flying Horse of Kansu, which I did shortly after attending the exhibition of archeological finds of the People's Republic of China, when it was on tour in Washington, DC, in 1975. My original drawing was done in the blue and white colors of the figurine's current patina, but through the magic of digital manipulation, I can present a unique image of it here in bronze tones, much as the horse may have appeared when it was first cast in the days of the Han Dynasty.

Sometimes, instead of modifying a photograph, I start from scratch, resulting in some of my...
