Description
A few years ago, I decided to put an arched trellis over my back gate, and I picked up a potted flowering vine to climb the trellis. The only climbing vine they had at the time was this Dutchmans Pipe vine, which they said was favored by butterflies. The vine has flourished and now fully covers the top half of the trellis, and I tied strings on either side, fastened at the other end to a nearby tree, so that the vine could spread out. Previously, when the vine flowered, the blooms were lost among all the bunched up foliage, but now there are several flowers hanging from the now vine covered strings. They are much easier to see now. The back side of this flower shows the bowl of the "pipe," the opening of which is surrounded by the large, dark red collar that you see in this picture.
