Description
Circa 1959, original pastel still life based on an assortment of souvenirs from a trip by my high school art teacher to some primitive village. Before boarding her plane to return home, a little boy she had befriended ran up to hug her and slipped a small, jade idol into her hand as a parting gift. It was their God of the Bellyache, who also was in charge of fertility; I suppose that makes sense. The carved wooden mask was used in native ceremonial dances. It was always my mother's favorite painting of mine, and I had it framed for her in 1960, as you see it now in this image. She hung it prominently everywhere she lived for the rest of her life, and hangs in my living room now. The image itself measures approximately 18x19 inches; the framed image measures 29x35 inches and is about 2 inches deep; the wood is 3 inches wide, and the glass is non-reflective.
